2018 FIFA WC: Ujah Tips Eagles To Surpass Cameroon, Ghana Records

Mainz 05 striker, Anthony Ujah has backed the Super Eagles to soar at the 2018 World Cup kicking off June 14 in Russia.

Nigeria are in the same group with Argentina, debutantes Iceland, and Croatia,

who they play first on June 16 at the 35,212 capacity Kaliningrad Stadium,

about 45 kilometers from the border with Poland.

With their best finish at the World Cup being in the second round,

which they first attained at USA 1994, the current Eagles side are hard-pressed

to surpass that record and possibly become the first African side to reach the semifinals,

which Ghana dramatically threw away in the last minute against Uruguay at the

quarterfinal stage of the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. Cameroon was

the first African nation to reach the quarterfinal at the 1990 edition in Italy.

With expectations running high in Africa of perhaps the best World Cup outing

for the continent’s five representatives, comprising Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco,

Senegal and Tunisia, Ujah has thrown his hat in the

ring for a Nigerian glory in Russia 2018.

Speaking in an interview with African journalists on the Bundesliga Tour at

the Opel Arena in Mainz, the former Werder Bremen forward said that

he was excited with the talents that abound in the Nigeria team.

‘’I am hopeful that this team will do the country and continent proud in

Russia and I personally believe that they can go as far as no team in

Africa has  attained if they stay determined and play to their true potentials’’,

added Ujah, who once played for Abuja FC and Warri Wolves in Nigeria

before seeking pastures greener in Europe.
