IS THE KITCHEN MEANT FOR ONLY WOMEN?
In a typical African home, an average African will tell u the kitchen is meant for the women alone. Some will go as far as saying it is tradition or use an inaccurate bible reference but I tend to believe otherwise. That is why I decided to do a survey on university students across Nigeria.
My survey made me understand that there are 4 schools of thought consigning this topic which are
Firstly those that wholeheartedly agree
This is the smallest group according to the survey. Believe in the mentality that the woman’s place is in the kitchen. Some quoted the saying, ‘Women take care of your husband, and the husband will provide for you’. They also say it is a job for the woman to cook, that boys are not meant to be in the kitchen.
Those that partially agree
This is the largest school of thought. They believe the woman should be in the kitchen but not always. They generally agree the man should help out in the kitchen, most especially when the woman is unable to be in the kitchen, like when she is pregnant. They also believe everyone should learn how to cook.
Those that totally disagree
This group is the most diverse when it comes to why they disagree. Some say it is not romantic, some say she shouldn’t because she is not the maid, some say it is not a rule in the constitution or Bible/Quran and few said whoever that is hungry should cook.
Those that believe it is an agreement
This group is the second most populated survey group. They believe it really doesn’t matter who is in the kitchen, once the family is happy and healthy. They strongly believe it is an agreement between the man and his wife. Meaning they are comfortable with anyone in the kitchen once it is a happy family.
Kitchen is for anyone
Everybody should learn how to cook
Parents should teach both the male child and the female child how to cook
